I simply don't understand why people freak out and party for the release of some piece of software at all. It's nice to see progress but after all software is a tool to work with.
Ok Mac people are different in that way by nature but I can't see why someone should adopt this kind of euphoric dance for new products in other fields.
Maybe I should ask my baker for a release party whenever he has some new kind of bread to sell.

IMHO the switch to modular X.org may be the biggest change.

Ubuntu 7.10's Compiz was "bling" because not everyone has it. Unfortunately Debian 4 was released with delay and there was nothing impressive in its Compiz. I never heard of Network-Manager as something really bling. Anyway, with rare releases, it's hard to be "bling" from upstream software.

Indeed, you can't both have long release cycles and coolest/newest, particularly with long freezes. Ignoring testing, it's not honest to say that Debian is coolest or newest.

It's good to be enthusiastic, but with moderation - Debian is far from perfect. If you push enthusiasm too far, it becomes fanatism. If you find something in Debian is cool, feel free to blog about it...or advertise it!

While I've always run stable on servers, etch is the first time I've used stable on my desktop for a long period after release. Normally I jump to testing pretty quickly, but not this time. I had been using Ubuntu on my laptop, but after its filesystem died I put Debian on there, as Ubuntu seems to add a little more crack each release.

Yes, half releases would be great! By that way, release cycle may take a longer time and the stable release will not become old.

    Regarding Etch+1/2...

Releases could be like Debian 4.0 and then so-called 'half' releases be like Debian 4.1, Debian 4.2, etcetera.
This would be much more descriptive, especially each main Debian release being an integer. (how was Debian 3.1 as a version number supposed to express 3 years of development over Debian 3.0?)

What happened to the plan announced at Debconf 7 to release Etch + 1year?

As I understand it, regardless of our position on the GFDL, the FSF doesn't want to give Debian so much as a nod unless we disavow ourselves of contrib and non-free. (Personally I would like to see that, but I don't think it will happen in the near future.)

Regarding point 4, about the constitution, there's no need to be DPL from someone that wants to help it. Note that Josip's resolution doesn't address that issue.

Regarding dropping interesting ideas, there's already a system at http://www.debian.org/devel/todo/

Regarding discussing our vision of Debian, I think you may be the most appropriate person to start the discussion :)
For the questions you already asked; I don't see why Debian should become just a supermarket. A supermarket isn't a GNU/Linux distribution. There are some good things in projects based on Debian and there should be work to integrate them.

Other then the ´left sock idea', all seem like worthwile, implementable ideas (modulo social issues). As noted, some are 'in motion' and some are being worked on and some 'being planned' (WAT, teams GR, freebsd inclusion, X/kernel/DI updates). There is already a RT, so maybe use it for 'bounties' or 'ideas'? 'HE' for DPL! I await LOLdebian's response!

Sorry, but whatever your opinion of your acts is - I believe that backing out from something one wants to make better because it's not easy is not a good move - it's a very bad move, showing how worthless one's intentions are. If you want to change something, you have to work! If it's pinging, nagging, kicking, screaming - doing something is the important part.

And really, you've wasted most of the time you were in the NM process. I can't understand how you, after wasting an AMs time by being unresponsive, are able to feel good about insulting other people for taking more time than you'd like.

But whatever, it's your decision to do what you want. As long as you're able to feel good about the stuff you have done and still do, it's fine by me.

It does help me. I am really enjoying the feeling of not having my work blocked by lazy people with power.

As for the project: it's the members' responsibility to fix it. I offered to become a member, presented the required evidence of my competence and motivation, jumped through the required hoops... and was not accepted. So the responsibility remains all yours. Oops, except that Debian doesn't have an institution of responsibility (constitution 2.1). Never mind.

As for other people in my position, I help them by warning them not to get into NM unless they want to be treated like shit.
